Bringing children to visit the public library from a young age is a good start for them to access many books in a quiet and focused space, improving critical thinking and imagination while reducing screen time. Children’s social interaction can also be fostered through reading programs.
This is a list of kid-friendly public libraries in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor of which we have personally visited or plan to bring our child to visit during the weekends to immerse in the wonderful world of books! We hope you get to visit some of these libraries in KL one day too!

1. Raja Tun Uda Library (Best Kid Friendly Library in Shah Alam)

What We Like About This Library:
- It is a modern 6 floor library overlooking a park and with a lake view as well as the Blue Mosque.
- Many dedicated study and reading rooms for older children that want to focus on their books without distractions.
- Check out the Reading Tree in the children’s zone on the ground floor where kids can immerse in various reading materials on top of a ‘hill’.
- Braille Room at Level 1 with many braille books.
- Large collection of children books where kids of various ages can develop reading skills in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
- Check out the Book Shower device to kill bacteria and remove dust from your books.

Things To Consider:
- Visitors can park in the indoor parking lot next to the library for RM2 per entry. There is a convenient walkway leading from the parking lot to the library entrance.
- For those who prefer an easier way to get to the library, there is a free buggy ride service for you and your kids as well from the parking area.

Membership Fees:
- Free membership for all Malaysians and permanent residents.
- Certain services and facilities (e.g. 6D cinema, meeting rooms) may incur additional fees.
Borrowing Books Terms and Conditions:

2. Playcentre Library
What We Like About This Library:
- Readers of all ages can find something they enjoy reading at Playcentre Library.
- The library is set in a humble bungalow house with a warm and homey atmosphere. Its cosy environment creates a welcoming atmosphere for families especially those with kids.
- They host playgroup activities for toddlers and preschoolers to explore the fun in reading and learning.
Things To Consider:
- Parking may be a bit challenging, so planning ahead is recommended.
- You can take the train to LRT Kelana Jaya Line and alight at Taman Jaya Station, which is about a 12-minute walk away.
- RapidKL bus routes: PJ01 and 782 stop a minute away from the library.
Membership Fees:
- Annual membership fee: RM16 (includes RM1 for new registration).
- Walk-in Playgroup trial session: RM5 per child.

- Good lighting, quiet atmosphere and free Wi-Fi in the library.
- A self-checkout kiosk is available making the book borrowing process quick and efficient.
Things To Consider:
- Parking is limited so it may be necessary to plan ahead.
- The library is relatively close to Taman Jaya LRT station.
Membership Fees:
- Regular members: RM31 for the first year, RM15 for each subsequent year.
- Lifetime membership: RM300 (one-time fee).
- Senior citizens & Persons with Disabilities (OKU): RM15 for the first year, RM10 for each subsequent year.
- MBPJ staff, spouses, and children: RM5 per year.

4. Children’s Library, Puchong

What We Like About This Library:
- Has a wide variety of books, carefully curated for preschoolers up to 12-year-olds.
- The library features an adult-assisted playgroup, which helps your children to develop social and communication skills. This makes this library a wonderful place for children to learn and play.
Things To Consider:
- Visitors will find ample street side parking available in the vicinity and at IOI Boulevard underground paid parking if it rains, making it convenient for those driving to the library.
- The nearest LRT station is IOI Puchong Jaya, from which it’s a short 5 minutes walk to the library.
Membership Fees: There are 5 levels of annual library membership, with different pricing options from RM10 to RM50 per year.

Borrowing Books Terms and Conditions:
- The number of books a member can borrow depends on their membership level (e.g., RM10 membership = 1 book, RM20 = 2 books, and so on).
- Fines for damaged books range from RM1 to the full replacement cost of the book.

What We Like About This Library:
- Visitors to this library can customize a notebook to your liking which is a unique experience for families with children.
- Some of the books in this library are considered vintage for readers to enjoy.
- It is a great spot for parents to relax while letting children explore the library. There is a cafe here for a quick bite or caffeine fix before or after your library visit.
Things To Consider:
- This library is located on the top floor of a restored shophouse at The Zhongshan Building. We recommend that you leave your stroller in the car.
- There are ample free open parking spaces available near the building.
- The nearest monorail station is Maharajalela, approximately a 6-minute walk from the library.
- Public bus lines: 120, 150, 202, 220, and 250 pass by close to the library.

6. The Kuala Lumpur Library
What We Like About This Library:

Things To Consider:
- Paid parking near the Kuala Lumpur Library is available but limited. Parking is available underground at Dataran Merdeka with rates ranging from RM10 to RM15.
- You may find it more convenient to take the LRT and walk about ten minutes from the Masjid Jamek LRT station.
Membership Fees:
- Free membership to all Malaysian citizens and permanent
- Membership is valid for two years, after which you’ll need to update your personal information at the service counter to maintain an active status.
Borrowing Books Terms and Conditions:
- Visitors can borrow books with three materials at a time with a 14 days loan period per item.
- Extension is available which is additional 14-day renewal that can be applied only once per item.
- RM0.10 will be charged per day per overdue book.

7. Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur Library
What We Like About This Library:
- This is a fantastic place for children to explore and learn in a clean and quiet environment.
- There are several separate study rooms that allow your kids to focus without distractions.
- The library provides mainly English and Japanese educational materials to help children start learning Japanese in a fun and engaging way.
- The fast Wi-Fi ensures a smooth experience for parents to access digital resources of books for their children or themselves.
- For convenience, an after-hours Book Drop Box is available outside the Japan Foundation’s main entrance so you can still return books even when the library is closed.
Things To Consider:
- The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur Library is located at Northpoint, nearMid Valley MegaMall. You can alight at the LRT at Abdullah Hukum LRT station or walk a short distance from the KTM Komuter station in Mid Valley.

- Annual membership fee: RM10
- Renewal fee: RM8 per year

8. Children’s Library at Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia
What We Like About This Library:
- The Children’s Library at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia has many books for children including fiction and non-fiction genres.
- Most of the reading materials focus on Islam, Islamic arts, science, architecture and history.
- Every Saturday at 3 PM, the library hosts engaging storytelling sessions designed for children aged 4 to 12.
- The library is stroller-friendly which eases family visiting with toddlers.
Things To Consider:
- Ample free parking available just opposite the museum building.
- For public transportation, stop at the KTM Komuter or ETS to Kuala Lumpur Station, which is a 5-minute walk from the museum, or use the LRT/MRT and alight at Pasar Seni Station, about a 10-minute walk away.
Membership Fees:
- No membership fee for the Children’s Library.
- Museum entry fees apply where children aged six and under can enter the museum for free.

9. Children’s Library at National Science Centre
What We Like About This Library:
- Located on the top floor of the National Science Center, provides a quiet space where children can read books or borrow some reading materials to take home.
- The library has non-fiction books, science journals, reference materials, and dictionaries, making it a great space for children to learn.
Things To Consider:
- Ample parking spaces, hence it is convenient for families arriving by car. The library is located near 1 Mont Kiara Mall and MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC).
- The nearest MRT station is Semantan MRT Station, from which you can take a short taxi or ride-hailing service to reach the centre.

- Children (below 17 years old): RM20 per year
- Adults (18 to 55 years old): RM40 per year

10. Anggerik Mokara Library, Kota Kemuning

What We Like About This Library:
- This is a welcoming community library in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, perfect for children.
- There is a small children’s playground and Kota Kemuning Lake Gardens just outside the library. Great to read and cool down in the library after walking outdoors.
- Houses a variety of books that children love, including popular series like Geronimo Stilton, educational books on Islamic teachings, the Sunnah of the Prophet, and history books about different countries and cultures.

Things To Consider:
- The Anggerik Mokara Library in Shah Alam has many parking spaces.
- The nearest bus stop, Komersial Mutiara Subang (Sa698) is approximately a 3-minute walk (about 188 meters) from the library.
- If you prefer using the MRT, you can alight at Kwasa Sentral station and take a bus or taxi to the library.


Membership Fees:
- Adults: RM15, with an annual fee of RM5.
- Teenagers (12 to 21 years old): RM10, with an annual fee of RM5.
- Children (5 to 12 years old): RM5, with an annual fee of RM5.
- Children below 5 years old, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities (OKU): Free membership.

11. Damansara Community Library

- The library’s special children section is thoughtfully designed to make reading fun and engaging. Whether children are looking for exciting adventures or educational books, they can find something that sparks their curiosity here.
Things To Consider:
- Limited basement parking is available at the Damansara Community Library.
- Take the MRT Kajang Line to the Pusat Bandar Damansara station, which is approximately a 25-minute walk from the library.
- Several bus routes, including T817, T818, T850, and T852, have stops near the library. Do take note of the library’s dress code.
Membership Fees: RM11 annually.
Borrowing Book Terms and Conditions:
- Patrons must present a valid identity card (MyKad/MyKid) to borrow or renew library materials

What We Like About This Library:
- This library is a bright, modern and welcoming space. The library is spacious and well-organised, easy for children to explore and enjoy reading.
- One of the best features is the separation between the children’s library and the adult section, allowing families to enjoy reading together while still having age-appropriate materials available.
Things To Consider:
- Plenty of free visitor parking available on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors.
- The library is located near the Raja Uda MRT Station if you are taking the train.
- Do take note of the library’s dress code.
Membership Fees:
- Free membership to all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents.
Borrowing Books Terms and Conditions:
- Free borrowing with a maximum of 3 books from the 12 Consortium Libraries for 30 days.
- Online application required; availability check takes 2 working days.
- Online renewal is allowed once for 30 days, if no booking has been made and you may renew via u-Pustaka Portal, self-service kiosks, or library counter as long as no fines are outstanding.
- Late return fine: RM1 on the first day, RM0.10 per day thereafter (max RM20 per item).

13. The Kuala Lumpur Library – TTDI Branch (Best Public Library in TTDI)
What We Like About This Library:
- The children’s section, located on the ground floor, has reading nooks for children to snuggle up and enjoy their favourite books.
- In addition to the usual chairs and desks, the library features big, comfy sofa-style seats for them.
- The books are clearly labeled, making it easy to find what you need.
Things To Consider:
- FREE parking for those driving here.
- You can also reach here by the MRT feeder bus from TTDI. The nearest bus stop, Komersial Wan Kadir (Kl1456) is serviced by several bus lines: 506, 780, PJ06, T813, T814 and just a 3-minute walk from the library.
- Do wear proper attire to the library, avoiding short pants and slippers.
Membership Fees:
- Free membership for those aged 4 and above that will be valid for two years.
- After two years, members must update personal information at the service counter to maintain validity.

- As for parking at the library, it is available but comes with a fee of RM5 for the first hour and RM5 for each additional hour, with a maximum daily charge of RM10.
- Located just a 2-minute walk from the Pasar Seni MRT and LRT stations.

- Students, Senior Citizens, and Persons with Disabilities (OKU): RM60

What We Like About This Library:
- Its great location makes it especially convenient for families. Parents handling errands at the Klinik Kesihatan, JPJ, JPN, or the immigration department can bring their kids here to relax and read while waiting for their turn at the respective government department.
- The library is clean, well-maintained, and provides a fun environment where children can learn and explore many interesting books.
- The librarian often does activities like arts and crafts with the kids on Saturday mornings.

Things To Consider:
- Park at the multi-storey parking lot in front of the UTC Keramat building if you are driving here.
- Keramat LRT station or Damai LRT Station is approximately a 15-minute walk from the library.
- Several bus lines service the area, including routes 220, 302, 303, and 402, with stops near the library.

- The library is thoughtfully divided into two sections, one for adults and one for kids. This ensures a dedicated space where children can enjoy reading comfortably.

- Ample parking, especially around 11 AM, with affordable rates at RM1 for less than an hour.
- The nearest LRT station is SS18 LRT Station, which is about a 10-minute walk from the library.
